Our Journey

The National Mining Association (NMA) is committed to advancing progress on sustainability issues. In 2020, the NMA established a CEO-led ESG Task Force to examine a wide range of sustainability issues and policy positions – including environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues – and to promote innovative solutions that enhance ESG performance amongst member companies.

The Sustainability Task Force, representing the diverse NMA membership, is in the process of building out the association’s sustainability platform to ensure we are providing our members value-added resources, peer-to-peer exchange, and other opportunities to discuss priority sustainability matters for the mining industry and our customers. The NMA’s platform is designed to maximize resources and facilitate valuable information exchange within its membership to assist individual companies in advancing their programs. To that end, the Task Force’s platform involves three stages that work concurrently together: inform, formulate and action. That process is actively underway and involves constant engagement by U.S.-based miners and suppliers to the industry.

The Task Force’s work will continue to evolve based on the needs of our members. Our current efforts are focused on providing our membership access to essential resources, educational opportunities on priority sustainability matters, and identifying opportunities for continued engagement with our stakeholders.

Our industry stands with the rest of the world in this dedication to addressing critical sustainability matters, while continuing to provide the raw materials that make modern life possible and that will fuel America’s economic recovery. We believe this is a journey of continued growth and learning. We will continue to update this page with the work of our Task Force, and stories from our industry.

CLIMATE CHANGE

The NMA recognizes that mining is an energy intensive industry and global action is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help mitigate the adverse effects of human impacts on climate change. The mining industry continues to proactively undertake efforts to protect the environment, including measuring and reducing its carbon footprint through continual investment in and implementation of technology solutions, energy conservation and efficiency programs. HEALTH AND SAFETY

The NMA supports industry efforts to prioritize safety in order to achieve zero fatalities, injuries, occupational illnesses, and safety incidents. Providing employees with safe and healthy workplaces creates positive effects throughout the mining value chain. This begins with cultivating a culture of safety throughout the entire operation and promoting the well-being of all employees. Read More

HUMAN RIGHTS

The NMA promotes responsible business practices for respecting the human rights of employees, including fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion; providing for employees’ safety, good health, training and development, and their general wellbeing; and, fair remuneration. The NMA recognizes the importance of respecting the rights, cultures, customs and values of people and communities, affected by companies’ activities, and of continually engaging and maintaining an open dialogue with key communities. The NMA also recognizes the importance of working to obtain the free, prior and informed consent of Indigenous Peoples for projects that are likely to have significant impacts on Indigenous Peoples’ communities.
