Newmont Mining Corporation is doubling down on its commitment to sustainability by partnering with an international organization focused on nature conservation and the sustainable use of resources.
Recently, Newmont announced a three-year collaborative agreement with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to identify ways the company can meet its global targets to achieve no net loss in biodiversity, and net gains in biodiversity where possible.
Through the agreement, Newmont asked IUCN to conduct independent reviews at select mine sites using the IUCN Biodiversity Net Gain Protocol, which aims to assist companies interested in transforming their operations to meet today’s widely-accepted global goals for biodiversity and sustainable development.
The first site visit was conducted in August at Newmont’s operations in Nevada, and future visits are planned for the company’s other regions.
Data gathered through the reviews will be used to design and implement enhanced biodiversity conservation programs at Newmont’s global mine sites and for knowledge sharing with IUCN members.
The IUCN is an international organization working in the field of nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. It is involved in data gathering and analysis, research, field projects, advocacy and education. The IUCN, originally formed in France, has more than 1,300-member organizations and utilizes the input of more than 13,000 experts.
