NMA Statement on Recognition of Metallurgical Coal as Critical Material

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Mining Association (NMA) today issued the following comment from Rich Nolan, president and CEO, on the administration’s action to designate metallurgical coal as a critical material:

“What could be more critical than the production of steel—the foundation of our modern infrastructure. Given its essential role in the production of 70 percent of the world’s steel as an essential manufacturing input, the European Union added metallurgical coal to its list of critical materials more than a decade ago. This is a commonsense, long overdue move that finally brings the U.S. more in line with our global counterparts. This designation not only buttresses the nation’s industrial base but it reflects this administration’s recognition of the vital importance of the nation’s coal communities and miners.”
