NMA Statement on Today’s Senate Hearing with FERC

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rich Nolan, President & CEO of the National Mining Association (NMA), released the following statement on today’s testimony concerning energy reliability:

“Testimony today from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee underscores that the nation is firmly in a grid reliability crisis where the loss of existing dispatchable generating capacity is far outpacing the ability to reliably replace it. As Commissioner Christie observed, the numbers simply don’t work. The nation’s reliability experts are telling us to slow down while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is pursuing a regulatory agenda that will greatly accelerate the loss of essential generating capacity. As Committee Chairman Manchin observed this morning, “the potential reliability impacts of these combined impacts are simply staggering.” The Biden Administration must stop dismissing on-the-ground reality and the grave threat posed to the reliable, affordable delivery of power. It should not require a grid catastrophe for us to change course and recognize the importance of the existing coal fleet to the nation’s grid reliability.”
