Record U.S. Coal Production, Consumption Forecast for 2006
Washington, D.C. — The United States can expect record-setting production and consumption for coal this year, according to the National Mining Association's (NMA) annual forecast released today. NMA is forecasting domestic coal production in 2006 will total 1.156 billion tons, a 3.2 percent increase over 2005 and 2.5 percent above the previous record set in 2001. NMA expects domestic and international demand for U.S. coal to total 1.187 billion tons in 2006, a new consumption record that surpasses the previous mark of 1.175 billion tons set in 2005.
