Coal Producers, Union Support Clean Coal Technology

National Mining Association (NMA) president and CEO Kraig R. Naasz and United Mine Workers of America president Cecil Roberts today urged Congress to support the "Carbon Capture and Storage Early Deployment Act" (H.R. 6258) sponsored by Representatives Rick Boucher (D-Va.), Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers. The bill would establish a $1 billion annual fund to finance large-scale demonstration projects for capturing and storing greenhouse gases from coal-based power plants. Naasz issued the following statement in support of the bill:

"The United States and much of the world will benefit from the investment in U.S.-led technologies that will neutralize carbon from coal, the most widely used fuel for electric power generation. Representatives Boucher, Upton and their colleagues deserve the full support of Congress for a bill that will be an indispensable part of any solution to the energy and environmental challenges we face."
